Why should I attend?

Have you ever come across an Institutional Review Board (IRB) that obliged you to ensure the ELS aspects of your research? Have you ever wondered what the law says about the technology you are using? Do you know to what extent you would be held liable if something when wrong when using a robot? Have you ever thought that the use of robots was going to dehumanize the delivery of care or the current education system?  Are you an academic interested in STEM/STEAM? Are you a medical professional who wants to use the latest robot technology?

If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, you might be interested in attending this twinned workshop on the Ethical, Legal and Social Issues of Robots in Therapy and Education.

The workshop will be hands-on. After a keynote speech, the organizers will briefly introduce the following four key topics:

  • Topic 1: The changing environment of healthcare and education with the introduction of robots
  • Topic 2: Ethics and dignity of patients and students
  • Topic 3: The privacy of patients and students
  • Topic 4: The liability of robots in the contexts of therapy and education

The participants can decide between four corresponding discussion groups. The workshop organizers will prepare worksheets and cases for each discussion group in order to approach the four topics in depth. The idea is to talk about concrete examples, to identify the key challenges of each topic, to discuss them and to come up with solutions to these challenges.

The discussion groups will be organized in an interdisciplinary manner to allow participants to explore issues directly connected to their own areas of expertise while also providing the opportunity to engage with other professionals from a wide range of disciplines.
